Alan Shearer has quizzed the length of time Mykhailo Mudryk is reportedly contracted to Chelsea for.

Speaking on Match of the Day 2 last night, Shearer addressed the piece of the puzzle that could tie Mudryk down for nearly the next decade.

The 22-year-old’s move from Shakhtar Donetsk was confirmed yesterday, with the player unveiled to the Stamford Bridge crowd at half-time during the game between Chelsea and Crystal Palace.

Todd Boehly and his team once again shifted the financial chess pieces to beat Arsenal to the signing of the Ukrainian international.

Everything about Mudryk’s deal on an economic scale is eye raising.

Chelsea paid Shakhtar £89m for the young forward.

£62m of that will be delivered up front, whilst the other £27m comes in the form of bonuses.

Part of this package is a £100,000-a-week salary, double that Arsenal apparently offered their long-standing target.

Within all the mountain of money is the eight-and-a-half year contract that Mudryk is said to have agreed to.

Terms up to four years are sometimes hard to come by; close to nine is almost unimaginable.

“What about the seven- or eight-year contract? It’s unusual,” replied Shearer whilst dissecting the provisions Chelsea made for their newest recruit.

Mudryk will not be the club’s highest earner by a long stretch, but he could easily be their longest serving player if he lives out the entirety of his deal.

His contract expires in 2031, a year after Benoit Badiashile’s, who also joined the Blues in January.

It’s certainly an investment for the future, but one Shearer still approached with doubt.

“It’s a bit of a scattergun approach for me. Some of the signings you think, yeah good player, but then you think about the money that’s been shelled out some players is just staggering,” said the former striker.
