'Near enough': Merson says how many more games Chelsea can afford to lose to win PL title

Paul Merson has suggested Chelsea can only avoid one more defeat in the Premier League this season if they want to win the title.

Chelsea have been in the conversation in the first half of the league season as title contenders, along with rivals Manchester City and Liverpool.

Thomas Tuchel’s Blues were at the top for a period of time, but a mini blip in December has seen them slip to third. The London giants are now three points behind second-placed Liverpool, while leaders Man City are a further three points ahead of them.

Unfortunately, Tuchel’s side have had back-to-back draws with Wolverhampton Wanderers and Everton in the last week. Also, they lost away to West Ham earlier this month.

Merson reckons that Chelsea may only be able to lose one more game in the remainder of the league season in order to overturn the six-points deficit to Man City, who are the defending champions and look in stunning form.

“Chelsea are near enough out of the title race and have probably lost the league in the last week because of this situation,” Merson wrote.

“They have probably got one more bad result in them before it’s gone, given the current six-point gap to Manchester City. If Chelsea lose just two more games this season that will be some going, but even that would require City losing four games – you just can’t see that happening.”

Chelsea out of title race

For now, Chelsea’s immediate attention needs to be getting back to winning ways and maintaining that gap on the teams below them.

The Blues are in danger of getting sucked into the top four race if they have a few more negative results during the festive period.

Tuchel’s men are definitely not out of the title race yet, though, because it was only a few weeks ago many considered them favourites.

It’s going to become much easier when they can field their best XI on the pitch at the same time, something which has been impossible in the last few months because of injuries and illness.

The title landscape could look very different after Chelsea’s league fixtures against both Liverpool and Man City next month.
