Agbonlahor says Potter should play Chelsea duo who didn't start yesterday

'Needs to pick': Agbonlahor says Potter should be starting two Chelsea players he benched vs Salzburg

Gabby Agbonlahor has urged the new Chelsea boss, Graham Potter, to start with both Wesley Fofana and Kalidou Koulibaly moving forward.

All eyes were fixed on Potter’s first Chelsea team selection in last night’s game against Red Bull Salzburg, which ended up in a 1-1 draw in the Champions League group stage tie.

There were a lot of obvious picks from the new head coach, who had only worked with the squad for a few days since his appointment at Stamford Bridge. However, some notable decisions were still made.

A lot was discussed about Raheem Sterling playing in a wing-back role, but it was justified given he scored a goal and spent most of the game in wide attacking positions. Peter Crouch even called him the best player on the pitch against Salzburg, too.

In addition, Potter went for a defensive back three of Marc Cucurella alongside experienced duo Cesar Azpilicueta and Thiago Silva. Therefore, centre-back summer signings Fofana and Koulibaly were put on the bench.

Fofana and Koulibaly

Many supporters were shocked to see both Fofana and Koulibaly benched for Potter’s first game in the manager’s dugout.

They’re both top-quality defenders to join this summer, but it looks like they will have to work hard to break into the starting line-up.

TalkSPORT pundit Agbonlahor is convinced Potter must start the two centre-halves in future, though.

“He (Potter) needs to pick his best two centre-backs and just give them game time. That’s got to be Koulibaly and Fofana, the money they’ve been bought in for,” Agbonlahor told talkSPORT.

Too early to judge

You can’t blame Potter for playing safe in his first game by putting faith in experienced centre-backs Silva and Azpilicueta, but playing both in the same back three isn’t advisable moving forward.

Let’s wait a few more games to see who Chelsea’s coach prefers as his favourites at the back.

Fofana, 21, is a talented French youngster that the club forked out £70million to get last month from Leicester City. It’ll be a big surprise if he’s not a key feature in Potter’s line up looking ahead.

Also, 31-year-old centre-half Koulibaly cost around £33million in the summer to sign from Napoli. He’s a powerhouse defender in the prime of his career, who will expect to play an important role for Chelsea.
