'Outstanding': Merson says £22m Chelsea player had best game of his Blues career on Sunday

Paul Merson thinks Edouard Mendy had the best game of his Chelsea career during Sunday’s Carabao Cup final.

It ended in defeat for Chelsea at the weekend in the League Cup final, as Liverpool came out winners on penalties. Unfortunately, the decision from manager Thomas Tuchel to bring number two goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga on for the penalty shootout backfired.

It finished 0-0 after extra time, with Blues goalkeeper Mendy playing a major role in keeping the opposition out.

Mendy, who turns 30 today, came up with some spectacular interventions at Wembley Stadium.

The £22million shot-stopper made some memorable saves from Naby Keita, Sadio Mane and Virgil van Dijk during the contest.

Sky pundit Merson claims it was the goalkeeper’s crowning performance in a Chelsea shirt so far.

“That was the best game I have seen Mendy have for Chelsea – he was outstanding – so why would you change your goalie? He’s playing the game of his life, red hot, can’t beat him, and you go and change it?” Merson told Sky Sports.

“Mendy’s come to Chelsea, he’s won everything and, at the end of the day, he’s had the game of his life. He was 10/10, he was absolutely outstanding, so he is not going to be sitting there thinking anything because he played well.”

Incidentally, Michael Owen hailed him as “outstanding” for his display on Sunday.

Chelsea’s clean sheet specialist

Mendy absolutely loves keeping clean sheets, especially when it comes to cup competitions.

He’s looked unbeatable in the Champions League since the start of last season, and he produced some more heroics at the weekend to frustrate Liverpool’s talented attack in the domestic cup.

His Blues record to date is a staggering 40 clean sheets in 74 appearances since joining from French club Rennes.

Any fan who watched Petr Cech at the peak of his powers may have thought the club would never find an heir in the same bracket, but Mendy’s giving him a run for his money right now.

If the Chelsea attack can sharpen up, this team can still achieve big things this season with their fabulous defence.
