'Outstanding': Paul Merson thinks Chelsea have completed a brilliant piece of transfer business this month
Paul Merson has claimed that Chelsea pulled off an “outstanding” purchase when they signed Mykhailo Mudryk from Shakhtar Donetsk this month.
Mudryk, 22, is one of the first-team stars added to the Blues squad during the January transfer window.
The rapid left-winger has arrived in west London for his first taste of Premier League football, something he certainly took in his stride when he made his Chelsea debut last weekend.
He delivered a superb 35-minute cameo off the bench at Anfield against Liverpool, which highlighted the sort of trickery, pace and creativity he can add to Graham Potter’s line-up.
Mykhailo Mudryk deal
There’s been some raised eyebrows in response to Chelsea splashing the cash for Mudryk, whose experience at the very highest level is still fairly limited.
However, Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson has given a big thumbs up on the Mudryk deal after his electric debut performance.
“Mykhailo Mudryk looks like an outstanding buy. He looked very lively and pacey [against Liverpool]. Jurgen Klopp brought James Milner off in no time against him on Saturday. Joao Felix will come back, so you’ve got him and Kai Havertz with Mudryk. It looks lively,” Merson wrote for Sky Sports.
Mudryk, who’s already been clocked as the fastest player in the Premier League this season, is going to torment defenders in the years ahead.
There was a real buzz around the individual whenever he received the ball against Liverpool.
It remains to be seen how his Blues career will unfold as he settles in a new country, but there’s every reason to believe he can improve and help a Chelsea forward line that does look a bit toothless.
The Mudryk deal cost Chelsea £62million to complete this month, which could rise to as high as £89million in bonuses (BBC).
If you consider how badly this side needs goals injected into it, Mudryk could be the club’s best deal of the window.
