Paul Canoville insists Chelsea player should be in England squad amid undefeated form
Chelsea legend Paul Canoville has urged England manager Gareth Southgate to consider taking Trevoh Chalobah to the 2022 World Cup amid the versatile defender’s fine form.
The Blues are on an eight-game undefeated run under Graham Potter, but Chalobah has an even more impressive record.
He has yet to taste a defeat in all the 25 Premier League matches in which he started for Chelsea so far.
This is hardly a coincidence, however, since the 23-year-old has emerged as one of the most reliable defensive options at Stamford Bridge.
Potter was even full of praise for the young defender’s “fantastic” display in Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Manchester United.
Surprisingly, Chalobah, who made three appearances for England U21s, has yet to be considered as one of the options for The Three Lions’ centre-back option for ahead of the upcoming World Cup.
Canoville believes this has to change soon.
“In other news how absolutely superb our guy Trevoh Chalobah was yesterday,” the Blues icon wrote on Twitter on Sunday.
“I hope Gareth Southgate as this boy starts and his team doesn’t lose.
“Simples!”
It would be a difficult decision for Southgate to change his defence so close to the tournament, but Chalobah has certainly made a very strong case for his inclusion.
Form-wise, he should be on the plane to Qatar next month.
