Paul Merson believes that Chelsea have already sold three “top class” players during this summer transfer window.
It’s been a very busy opening few weeks of the summer transfer window for Chelsea, largely down to the amount of player exits.
There’s a huge turnover happening at Stamford Bridge, which isn’t overly surprising given the squad was far too big last season.
Within the huge crop of departures, there’s certainly a few eye-catching names that stand out. The decision to sell Mason Mount, Mateo Kovacic and Kai Havertz to three different Premier League rivals is one that does divide opinion in the fanbase.

Sky Sports pundit Merson has labelled Chelsea’s activity in the window so far as “shocking”.
He certainly doesn’t like the decision to sell Mason Mount to Manchester United. Similarly, he’s not impressed by Mateo Kovacic joining Manchester City and Kai Havertz joining Arsenal.
Merson told Sportskeeda: “As things stand, Chelsea’s summer transfer window has been shocking, to say the least. They’ve got rid of top-class players like Mason Mount, Mateo Kovacic and Kai Havertz and replaced them with unproven players, for the lack of a better word. A lot could change between now and the end of the transfer window but at the moment, I don’t see it as good business.

Mount, Kovacic and Havertz certainly weren’t performing like “top class” individuals last season. You could say that about almost every player in the Chelsea squad, though.
We simply had to reduce the squad size for new head coach Mauricio Pochettino, who will have seen how many problems his predecessors had last season.
Ultimately, Chelsea have done well to raise some great cash from sales. But only time will tell just how costly selling to a rival will be.
As for replacing them, let’s wait and see how the transfer window finishes before judging.
