Paul Merson says 23-year-old and £71m teammate are definitely Chelsea's two best players now

Paul Merson thinks Mason Mount and Kai Havertz are the best players at Chelsea.

For certain, this is a Blues group with some top-quality individuals running through its core.

They may have just fallen short in competitions this season, but there’s enough talent to be excited about the future at Stamford Bridge under manager Thomas Tuchel.

Sky Sports pundit Merson thinks attackers Mount and Havertz are definitely the standout players right now in Tuchel’s squad.

“Even though Kai Havertz is Chelsea’s best player with Mason Mount, and someone they can build a team around, they still need a forward,” Merson wrote.

Best players at Chelsea

Yes, Mount and Havertz are in that top bracket in west London.

The likes of Reece James, N’Golo Kante and Thiago Silva belong in the thick of the conversation, too.

It’s going to take a slightly deeper squad and a slice of luck for the Blues to close that gap at the top looking into next season, though.

Mount and Havertz absolute gems

Mount, 23, is going to be massively disappointed by what happened in the FA Cup penalty shootout defeat against Liverpool, but he’s been a go-to player in the squad this season.

The England international can be delighted with 13 goals and 16 assists in 52 Chelsea appearances this campaign.

Liverpool’s Jordan Henderson consoled Mount after his penalty miss at the weekend, but at some stage he’ll get his happy ending at Wembley Stadium.

Meanwhile, £71million Chelsea forward Havertz has had an interesting season that’s got better as it’s progressed.

He’s reached 13 goals in all competitions, with signs of massive improvement and influence within the XI.

It’s quite telling that Tuchel has compared 22-year-old Havertz recently to iconic footballers Dennis Bergkamp, Robin Van Persie and Dimitar Berbatov.
