'Phenomenal': Paul Merson raves about Chelsea star during 1-0 win vs Crystal Palace

Paul Merson said Hakim Ziyech’s delivery was “phenomenal” during the 1-0 win for Chelsea against Crystal Palace this afternoon.

Thomas Tuchel’s Blues side stole three Premier League points at the death with an 89th minute goal on their trip to Selhurst Park.

For Chelsea, it took until the closing stages for them to break down a stubborn opposition.

Ziyech, who’s now scored in three consecutive Premier League appearances, produced a brilliant volley on his team’s away trip across London.

The 28-year-old’s playing his best football at Chelsea to date currently in his preferred right-winger position.

Merson, who was appearing as a pundit on Sky Sports, hailed the Moroccan during live coverage of his latest goal. Also, he highlighted his crossing throughout the contest.

“It’s a great ball by [Marcos] Alonso on the left-hand side, a long looping cross to the far post. Ziyech, who’s got a great left foot, I said earlier his service has been phenomenal, he sidefoot volleys in-between the keepers legs and gives him no chance,” Merson said.

Man in form for Chelsea

Finally, Ziyech is putting together a run of consistent performances.

There’s never been any doubting the individual quality of the ex-Ajax winger, but 18 months as a Chelsea player has been fairly stop-start for him. It looks like 2022 has been the turning point for him, though.

He’s been the match-winner again for the Blues in their quest to really consolidate third in the league table.

With two massive games coming up against Lille (Champions League) and Liverpool (Carabao Cup final) next week, Ziyech should be the first attacker in Tuchel’s line-up.

His end product is now improving when it comes to his finishing and choice of pass.
