'Rarely has a bad game': Sky pundit blown away by Chelsea star after 1-0 victory over Everton
Alan Smith was left blown away by the performance of Chelsea defender Thiago Silva against Everton and awarded him man of the match.
Chelsea’s new Premier League season kicked off on the weekend with a 1-0 victory on their trip to Everton, ending their recent poor run at Goodison Park.
Jorginho scored the only goal of the contest with his first-half penalty, so the Blues can be pleased with three points to start the campaign. Up next, the small matter of hosting Tottenham at Stamford Bridge next weekend.
Thiago Silva man of the match
Aged 37, Silva is someone who’s ageing like a fine wine.
He’s now in his third season as a Chelsea player so everyone knows what to expect from him, but he really is still one of the best centre-backs around.
Sky pundit Alan Smith, who was co-commentator on Chelsea vs Everton, singled out Silva as the outstanding performer on the weekend.
“Thiago Silva is like a Brazilian Rolls-Royce,” Smith told Sky Sports’ Main Event channel when asked for his man of the match (7:36pm, 6 August).
“He rarely has a bad game. His positioning is second to none.”
Still an elite CB
Silva produced some exquisite pieces of defending today to show why he’s still imperative in Thomas Tuchel’s squad.
Of course, there will be times when his minutes need to be managed. He’s just so consistent in the middle of the back three, though.
He had to contend with a pacey Everton forward line today, but he really does just play the game at his own pace.
The South American star produced a brilliant interception to deny a dangerous pass beyond the backline, as well as make an excellent block in the box when one-on-one with Demarai Gray.
