‘Really strange’: Ian Wright says £50m Chelsea star will be annoyed by what Potter is making him do right now

Ian Wright thinks Chelsea’s Raheem Sterling will be annoyed right now with playing in a wing-back position.

Sterling, who cost the Blues £50million in the summer, has played a variety of different roles during his opening few months at Stamford Bridge.

The 27-year-old England star has enjoyed the most success in his career as a winger, albeit he can slot in as a false-nine as well.

Therefore, it’s stunned a lot of people to see Graham Potter use the speedster in a wing-back role on a few occasions since he took charge as the new head coach.

Sterling will be annoyed

Wright believes that Chelsea’s No.17 is going to be frustrated that Potter is making him play as a wing-back.

It’s quite a fluid system that does allow the wing-backs to operate very high up the pitch when in possession, but there’s definitely more of a defensive responsibility on Sterling’s shoulders.

“It’s one of the confusing things that Graham Potter is doing at the moment which I can’t get my head around. Even when I did the analysis on the game the full-back area, Brighton just tore them to shreds out there, as they had [Christian] Pulisic and Sterling out there,” Wright said on the The Kelly & Wrighty Show.

“I couldn’t understand it and there’s no way he can be happy playing that role, especially when you look at what he did at City. It must be really strange and tough for him to have to come to a new club and play in a position like that.”

It’s no real surprise that Sterling has said he’s been “nowhere near” his usual level recently.

It’s obvious Potter is still trying to work out his preferred system and personnel, so no individual needs to get too worried just yet.

Sterling is one of the individuals in the Chelsea squad you want operating at his best, though.

He looked like the team’s biggest goal threat in attack when the campaign kicked off, and his lack of goal involvement is damaging right now.

The England international has already been trialled in a few different positions by Potter, so it feels like he’s still working him out.
