'Ridiculously good': Gary Lineker raves about Chelsea star's display in 2-0 win vs Lille

Gary Lineker raved about Chelsea’s Thiago Silva after his Champions League performance on Tuesday night.

Chelsea took control of their last 16 tie by beating French opposition Lille 2-0 at Stamford Bridge in the first leg.

First of all, Kai Havertz powered in a header from a corner inside the first-half to gain the early advantage. Afterwards, Christian Pulisic added a second just past the hour mark, after some excellent work from N’Golo Kante in the lead up to the goal.

It means the Blues will travel to France for the second leg with a decent two-goal lead, but there’s still work to be done to reach the quarter-finals of this year’s competition.

In fairness, visitors Lille were no pushovers that took care of possession well throughout. They did run into a very organised and discipline Chelsea backline, though.

Pundit Lineker singled out 37-year-old centre-back Silva for his immaculate display this evening.

“How good is Thiago Silva? I’ll answer that myself: ridiculously good. A wonderful defender who’s defying Father Time,” Lineker wrote on his personal Twitter account.

Another Chelsea masterclass

Yes, Silva dropped another defensive clinic in midweek.

The Brazilian lined up in the heart of the back three, as manager Thomas Tuchel returned to his system with three centre-halves.

He made numerous blocks and interceptions to quieten the Lille danger, something he does without breaking a sweat most of the time.

It’s remarkable to see him at his age deliver yet another near-faultless performance.

There were some injury scares tonight with duo Mateo Kovacic and Hakim Ziyech both forced off early into the second-half, so hopefully there is some positive news for them.

For Chelsea, they should wrap Silva in cotton wool ahead of Sunday’s Carabao Cup final against Liverpool.
