BT Sport’s Martin Keown has claimed during the live broadcast that he’s surprised Wesley Fofana didn’t do more to prevent Dinamo Zagreb’s opening goal tonight.
Mislav Orsic’s smash and grab goal opened the scoring for the home side, who held on to their lead without much threat for the remainder of the evening.
The Croatian champions’ strike came out of nowhere, after the Blues had been dominating the opening exchanges.
Thomas Tuchel will have been wondering how they hadn’t gone ahead early, with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in particular finding himself in a couple of promising positions.
However, the German was left having to watch his team fall behind after Zagreb hit them on the counter, with Orsic scoring after 13 minutes.
Keown questions Fofana
Keown was particularly critical of Chelsea’s newest defensive signing, wondering if any prior defensive options at the club would have done any better.
He said (September 6 6:15pm BT Sport 4): “I really thought Fofana should’ve caught him. Tuchel’s looking at it and wondering what happened there. I think Fofana could get back but credit the young man.
“You look at the players who have left the football club, Rudiger, I think he would’ve caught him there.”
Kepa Arrizabalaga, who was handed his first start of the season tonight, did little to help his new teammate out, making the finish a lot easier for Orsic than required.
As well as fingers being pointed at the goalkeeper, questions can also be asked of Kalidou Koulibaly’s influence on the goal, with him diving in unnecessarily to try and stop the flick on.
Ultimately, the goal was enough to hand Chelsea the worst possible start to life in the Champions League, with there being just a week until they take on RB Salzburg at Stamford Bridge in the second game of the group.
