'Sublime all night': Joe Cole blown away by Chelsea star's display in 3-0 win vs AC Milan

Joe Cole was left blown away by the performance of Chelsea’s Reece James in Wednesday night’s win against AC Milan.

The Blues breathed new life into their Champions League campaign by securing a vital 3-0 victory at Stamford Bridge tonight.

Graham Potter’s side made fairly light work of the Italian champions, who they face again next week in Milan.

Wesley Fofana, who was actually forced off with an injury, opened the scoring in the first half with his first goal for the club.

Meanwhile, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and James both netted in the second period to earn three points.

Reece James against AC Milan

On the final whistle, pundit and former Chelsea player Cole was left waxing lyrical about James:

“Reece James, sublime all night. Excellent. There are not enough superlatives to say about him,” Cole BT Sport 2 (9:55pm, 5 October).

James flexed his attacking muscles in midweek with a dominant European display, which is why he’s rated as one of the best full-backs/wing-backs in the game right now. In fact, Michael Owen recently said he’s in the world’s top five right-backs right now.

The 22-year-old assisted the Aubameyang goal with a great cross into the penalty box.

In addition, he got on the scoresheet himself with a lethal finish inside the box that he fired into the roof of the net.

Dominant display

In fairness, Chelsea looked far superior to their opponents on the night.

The Blues are still improving and have a long way to go under Potter, but there were plenty of encouraging signs with some of the individual performances again.

It’s no surprise to see that James is already becoming a pivotal figure under the new coach.

Despite a great win tonight, everyone should expect a much tough assignment next week in Milan.
