'This formation': Jody Morris comments on Tuchel's Chelsea tactics in Everton win
Former Chelsea midfielder and assistant manager Jody Morris has reacted to Chelsea’s 1-0 Premier League opening win over Everton on Saturday.
The Blues start the new Premier League campaign with a win over Frank Lampard’s Everton side at Goodison Park.
As expected, the visitors dominated the possession of the ball but struggled to create many big chances.
Fortunately for Chelsea, Jorginho’s penalty goal at the end of the first half proved enough to seal the win despite the unconvincing overall performance.
Morris had his say on the result after the game.
“After our recent record away at Everton… take the points all day,” the former Chelsea academy head coach said on Twitter.
“I’m sure Thomas Tuchel will want improvement.”
As Morris pointed out, Chelsea had a quite poor record against Everton at Goodison Park. This is their first win at Goodison Park since 2017.
Tuchel’s new signings; Kalidou Koulibaly, Raheem Sterling, and Marc Cucurella, had very good Chelsea debuts, although Koulibaly picked up an injury during the game.
Morris also argued that Tuchel’s 3-4-3 formation hindered Chelsea’s attacking threat.
“Felt the first half had long periods in Everton’s half without penetrating the back line enough,” he wrote on Twitter during the game.
“[There was] also a lack of bodies in the box…
“Unfortunately in this formation that happens quite often.”
