Alan Shearer claims Newcastle United were unfortunate to lose Sunday’s Premier League match against Chelsea.
Chelsea, who continue to play despite sanctions on the club, secured a last-gasp win this afternoon at Stamford Bridge.
In-form Blues striker Kai Havertz scored in the final minute of the 90 to steal three points in the 1-0 result.
The 22-year-old showed exquisite technique to control a pass floated into the box before prodding his finish past the goalkeeper.
It’s been a difficult time around the Bridge in the past week given talk about the sanctions and a potential takeover, but the players deserve huge praise for the way they continue to grind out results.
Newcastle legend Shearer believes his former side were unlucky to lose at the weekend, though.
He highlighted an incident when Trevoh Chalobah battled with Jacob Murphy in the penalty area during the second half, but the referee waved away calls for a spot-kick. Also, he did give credit to the quality of Havertz’s goal.
Top four looks in the bag for Chelsea
It’s nice for a few hours to focus on the football at least.
Third-placed Chelsea have an 11-point cushion to fifth-placed West Ham and it’s going to take a might collapse not to finish in the top four.
In fairness, they’ve not quite managed to keep up with the tremendous pace of the division’s top two, Liverpool and Manchester City.
However, this is a special group of Chelsea players that managed to find a way to win against Newcastle without playing at their best. They perhaps had a slice of luck on the day, too.
