Gus Poyet was critical of Chelsea player Callum Hudson-Odoi after he wasted a great goalscoring opportunity during last night’s 1-1 draw against Brighton.

Chelsea slipped up yet again in the Premier League after being held by Brighton to a draw at Stamford Bridge. Unfortunately, Danny Welbeck’s stoppage time equalsier cancelled out the opener from in-form Blues striker Romelu Lukaku.

There was a golden opportunity that Hudson-Odoi squandered to put the hosts 2-0 ahead at Stamford Bridge, though.

The 21-year-old attacker burst forward on a counter-attack for Chelsea and some poor decision-making resulted in no attempt at goal.

He could’ve taken a shot on himself when one-on-one with the goalkeeper. Instead, he tried a square pass to teammate Mason Mount that was intercepted by a defender.

Pundit and ex-Blues player Poyet was not very impressed with Hudson-Odoi’s error:

“It’s not like he tried to pass behind the defender or tried to pass around the defender. He hit the defender straight away. That’s very strange… He didn’t do one or the other,” Poyet told Amazon Prime (29 December).

Hudson-Odoi frustrating Chelsea fans

Yes, Hudson-Odoi is a big favourite with supporters because he’s one of several products from the academy at Cobham.

However, he’s continuing to frustrate them this season.

It’s clear that the English speedster brings something extra to the Blues XI with his dribbling and directness, something that can be missing from Tuchel’s line-up at times.

The lack of end product is still the major dark cloud hanging over him, though.

His lack of ruthlessness in the final third has cost Chelsea a few times now this season and you’d have thought it would’ve been another three points in the bag if they’d opened up a two-goal lead against Brighton.

Aged 21, there is so much time to improve and Hudson-Odoi remains an amazing talent. He is running out of lives if he wants to stay in this XI, tough.
