‘Wow’: Paul Merson can’t believe what £32m Chelsea player just did against Nottingham Forest

Paul Merson cannot believe the chance Nicolas Jackson missed in Chelsea’s 1-0 defeat against Nottingham Forest earlier today.

Nicolas Jackson fired over the cross bar from just a few yards out late in the second half, with the miss shocking Merson.

Commentating on the game on Sky Sports‘ Gillette Labs Soccer Saturday (02/09/23 at 04:45pm), the Arsenal legend said: “Wow, I don’t know how he’s missed it. He’s gone with his wrong foot. He’s gone with the outside of the foot. What an opportunity.”

Chelsea’s loss against Forest means Mauricio Pochettino has won just one of his first four Premier League games in charge as manager of the Blues.

Ultimately, it has been a disappointing start to the new season by Chelsea, who will not have a chance to bounce back from their latest poor result until after the international break.

Nicolas Jackson has to do better

Chelsea could have easily walked away with a point today if Jackson put away that chance, which looked fairly easy.

Going forward, the 22-year-old, who cost the Blues £32m after he joined from Villarreal during the summer transfer window, has to put those kind of opportunities away.

If not, it is going to be a very long campaign for Pochettino’s men, who will struggle to qualify for the Champions League should they continue to squander such chances.

Hopefully when Christopher Nkunku returns, Chelsea will become a much more proficient outfit in front of goal. However, that will not be for a while, meaning Jackson and the rest of the team’s attackers need to step up.

All in all, Chelsea fans may not be too pleased with what they have seen from their side under Pochettino so far. But the Argentine has time to turn things around.
