Jamie Carragher claims he can’t believe how much money Chelsea spent in the summer transfer window after watching their defeat to Newcastle United over the weekend.
It’s now three consecutive defeats in Premier League games for Chelsea, who will sit eighth in the table over the winter break.
The Blues may have a squad stacked of individuals that will be jetting off next week to play at the World Cup, but it doesn’t look like any of them are in good form right now.
Graham Potter’s side were beaten again this evening by a 1-0 scoreline away at Newcastle, with Joe Willock firing in a winning goal in the second-half.
Carragher reaction to Chelsea defeat against Newcastle
Carragher highlighted Chelsea’s spending in the transfer market after seeing them lose yet again.
“Eddie Howe is getting more from his players than any other manager in the PL. While you can’t believe Chelsea spent £275m in the summer on a team that was very good in the last couple of years,” Carragher wrote on Twitter.
It does feel like Potter has a lot of work to do with this squad, so it’s fair enough to criticise the club’s spending.
The £70million signing of Wesley Fofana from Leicester City was a big chunk of the summer splash out, so the fact he got injured at the start of October and has missed a very busy schedule doesn’t help.
Elsewhere, marquee signings such as Kalidou Koulibaly and Marc Cucurella are clearly still trying to find their best levels at Stamford Bridge.
Raheem Sterling, who has five goals so far and missed tonight through illness, actually fits into the category of a decent addition.
Potter does have the next month to plan behind the scenes how he’ll get the best from this group, albeit most will be in Qatar for the World Cup.
There’s been so many different formations and systems under him, which can be a good thing. However, everything feels disjointed right now and nobody could name what a best XI looks like.
It’s been great to see the financial investment in adding to the squad, but Chelsea’s business does look poor when you compare it to Premier League rivals like Newcastle.
