£4.5m icon 1st, Lampard 5th: All 28 Chelsea goalscorers vs West Ham at Stamford Bridge
Chelsea host West Ham United at Stamford Bridge in a Premier League game for the 26th time on Sunday, in a fixture that has previously seen 28 different players net for the Blues.
Twelve different players have scored multiple times for the west London outfit against the east London side, as well. While their strikes and those of the 16 to score once – including an own goal by Rio Ferdinand in November 1997 – combine for a total of 47 Chelsea goals.
Ferdinand broke the deadlock against the Irons for Ruud Gullit’s Blues, before Gianfranco Zola converted a direct free-kick. John Hartson replied for the Hammers two minutes after the Italian fired past Craig Forrest. But Harry Redknapp’s men could not find an equaliser.
Zola had already scored once against West Ham before Chelsea’s 2-1 win in November ‘97. He struck home between a brace by Mark Hughes to beat the Hammers 3-1 in December 1996, following the attacking midfielder’s £4.5m transfer from Parma just a month earlier.
Zola tops the charts for Chelsea goalscorers at home to West Ham
Zola would face the Irons at Stamford Bridge during a Premier League match seven times during his Chelsea career. He would also feature on the winning side four times, and is the Blues’ joint all-time top-scorer in the clash with Eden Hazard and Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink.
But unlike Hazard and Hasselbaink, Zola struck each of his four goals on home soil against the Irons without penalties. Hazard required one spot-kick between his £32m arrival from LOSC Lille in 2012 and initial £89m exit to Real Madrid in 2019 to achieve four home goals.
Hasselbaink, meanwhile, needed two spot-kicks to hit four Chelsea goals past West Ham at Stamford Bridge. The Dutchman broke the deadlock from 12-yards out in August 2000 and again in September 2002. He also scored an open-play brace in a 5-1 win in January 2002.
West Ham last stopped Chelsea from scoring at Stamford Bridge during the Irons’ 1-0 win in November ‘19. Tammy Abraham and Thiago Silva then took revenge in December 2020 to win 3-0, with Abraham becoming the eighth Blues player to net twice against the Irons.
He joined Hughes and a clutch of Stamford Bridge heroes in having two home goals to his name against the Hammers. The eight-man list that ranks fifth in the all-time list of Chelsea Premier League scorers at home to West Ham also includes Frank Lampard and John Terry.
