With Marc Cucurella gone, the latest transfer news involving possible new signings at Chelsea are all to do with a new left-back. One name on Chelsea’s radar is Andrea Cambiaso.
Cucurella’s immediate exit was confirmed on Monday morning, 12 hours after reports had emerged on Sunday evening that saw Chelsea and Real Madrid agree a £52m fee for Spain’s World Cup defender.
RATE 1-10: Is Marc Cucurella’s exit good business by Chelsea?
Hours after being confirmed as a new Real Madrid player, Cucurella was starting for Spain in their World Cup opener. An embarrassing 0-0 draw with minnows Cape Verde, though Spanish media praised him.
Meanwhile, Chelsea are now plotting to replace Cucurella. Talks have been opened for Sporting Lisbon’s Maxi Araujo and Atalanta ace Marco Palestra, while Chelsea’s dream signing is Newcastle’s Lewis Hall.
What Xabi Alonso thinks about Juventus star Andrea Cambiaso
Cambiaso was initially linked with Chelsea a few weeks ago, and since Cucurella’s exit, reports in Italy say Chelsea have now opened talks to sign the 19-time Italy star. Juventus are said to want a fee of just £35m.

With Cucurella bringing in an initial £47.5m and a book profit of £17.5m, signing Cambiaso would prove to be in Chelsea’s interests both on the pitch, and financially. But what does Alonso think of Cambiaso?
Italian journalist Gianluca Longari has revealed insight into what Alonso specifically thinks of Cambiaso. A player Rafa Benitez once explained is the perfect kind of player for Chelsea target Dusan Vlahovic.
Longari said on X: “Chelsea has made direct inquiries about Juventus’ Cambiaso. Cambiaso is a profile appreciated by Xabi Alonso, although we’re only at an exploratory stage regarding a possible deal.”
Chelsea are not alone in their pursuit of Andrea Cambiaso…
Chelsea need a left-back that can also play as a wing-back. Cambiaso fits the bill, and his £35m price tag is easily affordable. Alonso likes him, and he suits the kind of striker that thrives on converting crosses.
Who would you sign to replace Marc Cucurella? 🫵
Andrea Cambiaso is the latest player to be linked.
It all points to a signing that makes sense. He is experienced at the top of Italian football, and his 19 caps show he is a regular at National Team level. Had Italy qualified for the World Cup, that would be higher.
But if anything shows just how good Cambiaso is, it is the level of interest from other clubs. Reports this week say Barcelona, Atletico Madrid and Inter Milan would all like to sign Cambiaso, proving his worth.
The issue with those clubs also being in the mix for Cambiaso is that they offer Champions League football and a real chance of silverware. Chelsea have no European football of any form to tempt him.
