Gabriel Slonina is surely annoyed by a rumour now coming out of Chelsea as Mauricio Pochettino makes a decision on his goalkeeping department.

According to Fabrizio Romano, the Argentine is now looking for a young goalkeeper to provide competition for Kepa Arrizabalaga after Edouard Mendy joined Al-Ahli.

So, why would that annoy Gabriel Slonina? Let’s take a look…

What’s the story?

Well, Chelsea spent £12m to sign the promising glovesman from Chicago Fire in August 2022.

Slonina moved to Stamford Bridge at the start of 2023 and made eight Premier League 2 appearances, ahead of the 2023/24 campaign where he would have hoped to get an opportunity.

Now – however – Pochettino is said to be looking at Shakhtar Donetsk No.81 Anatoliy Trubin as a young goalkeeping option who can compete with Kepa.

In our view, Slonina may be thinking “what about me” after hearing that update from the reliable Romano.

It would surely be quite demoralising for the United States international to see another young goalkeeper arrive at Stamford Bridge, just as Mendy’s departure may have caused his eyes to light up in regards to getting a first-team shot.

Chelsea need to trust Slonina

£12m is not a small amount of money for a 19-year-old shot stopper, so Chelsea should put faith in the teenager and back their initial investment, rather than sign another goalkeeping prospect in the 21-year-old Trubin.

The American was featured on Goal‘s list of the most promising young talents on the planet, while Arsenal’s Matt Turner has also called his fellow countryman an “extremely talented” goalkeeper, as quoted by those at Goal.

Chelsea must consider their existing options before dipping into the market, and Slonina should be knocking on Pochettino’s door to ask questions if the Blues really are thinking about signing Trubin.

Hopefully, the Illinois-born glovesman is not forgotten about by those at Stamford Bridge.
