Conor Gallagher is now ready to leave Chelsea after being deemed surplus to requirements at Stamford Bridge.

That is according to the Evening Standard.

What’s the story?

Well, there have been a few conflicting reports involving the England international.

A story from Tutto Mercato Web in Italy claimed that Chelsea want to tie Gallagher down to a new contract, with his current terms set to expire in June 2025.

A separate update from Dean Jones – who was speaking to Give Me Sport – stated that the Chelsea No.23 is totally committed to the Blues, and wants to fight for his place.

Those stories were either inaccurate, or the situation has now changed significantly, as a far more reliable source in the Evening Standard now claim that Gallagher accepts he needs to leave Chelsea, as he is surplus to requirements.

Interestingly, Nizaar Kinsella also mentions that Mauricio Pochettino admires the 23-year-old, which suggests that this step could be a club decision taken by Todd Boehly.

The £50,000-a-week Gallagher has impressed in pre-season under the Argentine, scoring in the 5-0 win over Wrexham and also in the 4-3 victory against Brighton.

Chelsea should keep Conor Gallagher

Unless Chelsea need to sell the Epsom-born midfielder for financial reasons, we can’t understand why Pochettino wouldn’t want him around next season.

Gallagher is a very unique footballer when used correctly. His energy, positional awareness and finishing skills make him a very effective No.10 – or even a No.8 when given the freedom to attack the box.

The Chelsea academy graduate’s two goals under Pochettino in pre-season suggest he would be an asset under the Argentine, and we find it very strange that Chelsea have decided to put him up for sale.
