Brennan Johnson has decided that Chelsea are not his first choice this summer – with Tottenham actually now the Nottingham Forest No.20’s preferred destination.

That is according to the Daily Mail’s Transfer Confidential email (sign-up link here).

So, what is the latest on Chelsea target Brennan Johnson? Let’s take a look…

What’s the story?

Well, the Daily Mail believe Nottingham Forest want £50m to sell the Wales international this summer.

However – even if Chelsea decide to offer that sum of money – Johnson may reject the Blues.

It is said that the Welshman wants regular first-team football if he leaves the City Ground this summer, and feels Tottenham represent the most appropriate destination to get that playing time.

West Ham are also interested in signing Johnson, and can offer the Nottingham-born striker UEFA Europa League football.

Nevertheless, the Daily Mail specifically mention that the Nottingham Forest No.20 has Spurs down as his preferred destination.

Chelsea should leave Brennan Johnson to Tottenham

In our view, Chelsea should not waste any time trying to change Johnson’s mind.

The 22-year-old is an impressive forward with the potential to become a top performer in the Premier League.

However, Chelsea must stop this obsession with potential, and give Mauricio Pochettino ready made players who can turn things around at Stamford Bridge immediately.

Johnson is the type of signing Manchester City and Arsenal can afford to make – an icing on the cake style addition, if you will.

However, Chelsea need more substance, and cannot invest £50m on potential after picking up just one point out of six in the Premier League so far this season.

Be sure to keep an eye on developments at Stamford Bridge – even if Johnson does not arrive, we still expect Chelsea to be busy with less than two weeks remaining in the transfer window.
