Romano: Chelsea in advanced talks to sign £77m centre-back

‘Advanced talks’: Chelsea now nearing signing £77m defender in another massive transfer - Romano

Chelsea are reportedly in advanced talks to sign Josko Gvardiol from German side RB Leipzig.

According to well-respected journalist Fabrizio Romano on Twitter, the Blues are in “advanced talks” with Leipzig about a deal for the young defender.

It is understood the potential transfer would see the 20-year-old stay in Leipzig for a year before officially joining up with the Chelsea squad in 2023.

Romano explains a bid worth around €90million (£77million) has been submitted on Tuesday, with negotiations now ongoing.

This news has come out of the blue and it sounds like Chelsea are nearing yet another massive transfer in this summer window.

Chelsea advanced talks to sign Gvardiol

Gvardiol was linked with a potential move to Stamford Bridge earlier in the window, but Romano’s update on Tuesday has come from nowhere.

It was reported by Romano at the end of July that Chelsea wanted to sign the Leipzig star, who’s massively admired by Blues manager Thomas Tuchel. However, any kind of deal this summer was deemed unlikely to happen.

It sounds like Chelsea may have found a compromise as they chase a transfer that will allow Gvardiol to spend the 2022/23 season in Germany before arriving in London.

Another huge transfer

For £77million, Gvardiol would immediately become one of the world’s most expensive defenders of all time.

Let’s see if Chelsea can get this transfer wrap up as they enter advanced discussions.

Tuchel’s side have already gone big in this window with marquee arrivals like Marc Cucurella, Raheem Sterling and Kalidou Koulibaly.

In addition, Leicester centre-half Wesley Fofana will reportedly join Chelsea this summer for around £70million.

It looks like Chelsea are starting to build a new-look defence that could be around for the long-term.
