Chelsea were interested in Sao Paulo winger Antony Matheus dos Santos prior to his transfer agreement with Ajax Amsterdam, according to his agent.
According to a report from De Telegraaf, the 20-year-old’s move would break the transfer record in the Eredivisie.
The report claimed Ajax agreed to an initial €16million fee which could rise to €28.8m including bonuses.
Antony’s agent Junior Pedroso has now opened up about several other suitors for his client, including Chelsea.
He told Yahoo Sports: “Borussia Dortmund was close by and even sent someone to Brazil.
“There was also interest from two major clubs from England, including Chelsea.
“We spoke to a total of 12 clubs.”
The Brazil U-23s star is seen as a replacement for Hakim Ziyech, who will join the Blues for a reported fee of €40m (£33.3m) in the summer.
Ajax football director Marc Overmars told the BBC: “We are getting a creative player who can play in every position up front.
“Some of our players will be leaving this summer — we need to plan for that, so it’s great that we’ve been able to finalise this transfer.”
Chelsea fans are unlikely to be disappointed after missing out on Antony, however, as they will be too busy waiting for Ziyech’s arrival at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea also have two exciting young wingers already in Christian Pulisic and Callum Hudson-Odoi.
