Chelsea could face competition from Arsenal to sign Bayer Leverkusen defender Jeremie Frimpong in the summer.

Jeremie Frimpong has been linked with a move to Chelsea, with Defensa Central claiming last month that the Blues are keen on the right-back because of all of Reece James’ injury problems.

However, according to Bild, Arsenal are now chasing Frimpong and the Dutchman will be allowed to leave Leverkusen for €40m (£34.4m) at the end of the season.

He has been incredible for Xabi Alonso’s side this term, coming up with 11 goal contributions in 16 Bundesliga appearances.

It is no surprise that Frimpong has been linked to both Arsenal and Chelsea.

Malo Gusto could prevent Chelsea from moving for Jeremie Frimpong

If James continues to pick up injuries, then maybe Chelsea will have to bring in a new right-back.

However, if the England international recovers from his hamstring operation well, then there will not be a need.

When fit, James is the Blues’ undisputed No.1 in the right-back position, while of late, Malo Gusto has really proven that he is a capable deputy.

The 20-year-old has looked really good going forward, setting up Armando Broja’s goal against Preston North End over the weekend with a superb cross. It actually came from the left flank; nevertheless, it showed that he can carry a threat in attack, which is what is required of all full-backs in this day and age.

All in all, Gusto is proving to be a bargain for Chelsea and could end up being the reason why the Blues do not move for Frimpong or another right-back in the summer. Again, though, a lot could hinge on James.

If the Chelsea captain cannot stay fit, Frimpong is going to become a very tempting opportunity at £34m. Arsenal, however, could complicate things it seems with their own interest.
