Former Chelsea defender Ashley Cole said he would like to see Leicester City’s Ben Chilwell at Chelsea.
Chelsea are reportedly looking for a new left-back this summer, with Chilwell and Porto’s Alex Telles among the reported transfer targets.
Cole, who returned to the club as an academy coach in 2019, named the former as an ideal signing for the Blues.
He told the Daily Star: “I’d love to see him (Chilwell) here. I think he’s a quality player, I’ve heard he’s a Chelsea fan so yes I’d like to see him here.
“It’s a big decision for the club but quality-wise for sure he is good enough.
“But that depends on if he wants to leave or if Leicester will sell him – that’s something the clubs would need to talk about.”
Chilwell has been instrumental for Brendan Rodgers’ Leicester City who now occupy third place in the Premier League. Cole also believes the 23-year-old has enjoyed the licence to attack given to him at Leicester.
On areas Chelsea have to improve this summer, Cole said boss Frank Lampard needs to bolster his squad-strength.
He said: “I definitely think they need to add to the squad in terms of strength in depth really. But they also have to keep going and get these younger guys some more game time, get them more experienced.”
Chelsea have five players currently out of contract this summer. Willian, Pedro, Olivier Giroud, Willy Cabalero, and forgotten man Marco van Ginkel are all in the final months of their respective contracts.
The Blues announced the signing of Ajax’s Hakim Ziyech last month, but are likely to invest heavily in the summer after two inactive transfer windows.
