Chelsea could be about to ruin one of Tottenham Hotspur’s contingency plans.

Chelsea‘s London rivals Tottenham are reportedly eyeing a new right-back because of doubts surrounding Pedro Porro’s future.

However, it looks like Chelsea are also interested in one of Spurs’ potential targets after Reece James’ latest injury.

The 24-year-old cannot stay fit, and it now appears that the Blues are thinking about signing another right-back in 2025.

Chelsea and Tottenham keen on Lutsharel Geertruida

RB Leipzig’s Lutsharel Geertruida could be the man to solve Chelsea’s right-back issue.

According to CaughtOffside, Chelsea have made their interest in Geertruida known. But so have Tottenham it seems.

The same outlet claims that Spurs have identified the Dutchman as a potential replacement for Porro.

CaughtOffside’s report states that Geertruida wants to move to the Premier League and could cost around €45m (£37m).

While right-back has been a problem for Chelsea this season, they have had no issues at left-back. Marc Cucurella has actually surprised Troy Deeney with his performances in west London.

What next for Chelsea and Reece James?

Despite the links with Geertruida, it does not look like Chelsea are giving up on James just yet.

Chelsea want to find out why James keeps getting injured, but eventually they will have to act if his situation does not improve.

Enzo Maresca cannot just rely on Malo Gusto, who has also had some issues this season. It has seen the likes of Moises Caicedo and Wesley Fofana have to play at right-back.

Neither player can be a long-term option for Chelsea there, especially the former, whom Maresca really needs in the middle of the pitch.

Caicedo has been one of the best midfielders in the Premier League this term, perhaps the best. And while he managed to do a job against Aston Villa at right-back over the weekend, his ability would be wasted there.

One more injury to James, and Chelsea have to buy a right-back, be it Geertruida or someone else.
