Chelsea and Liverpool could be about to go head-to-head in the transfer market again.

The two clubs battled it out for Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia during the summer, with Chelsea coming out on top in both cases. And now, it looks like they could get into another fight but this time over Bayer Leverkusen defender Piero Hincapie.

According to CaughtOffside, both Chelsea and Liverpool are interested in signing the 21-year-old.

The outlet claims that the Reds are trying to steal a march on their rivals and that it would take at least a €70m (£60m) offer for Leverkusen to even consider selling their centre-back.

Chelsea appear to be on the lookout for a new central defender because of Thiago Silva‘s contract situation and Trevoh Chalobah’s potential departure.

Silva will be a free agent at the end of the season, while Chalobah continues to be linked to other Premier League clubs.

Chelsea interested in Piero Hincapie

Hincapie is the kind of centre-back Chelsea have signed recently, so it would not be a surprise to see them make a move for him.

Like Benoit Badiashile and Wesley Fofana, the Ecuador international is still very young.

He has a bit of experience, though, playing three seasons in the Bundesliga and earning 30 caps for his country. But is that enough?

You want proper experience in your side, especially at the back. Chelsea have a lack of it and it is probably one of the things that has cost them this term.

For now, though, this looks like the direction the club want to go in. And while it may not be bearing much fruit now, who knows what the future holds? Chelsea fans would still probably feel much more confident, however, if the club started signing more seasoned players and not just footballers with high ceilings.
