Chelsea are still planning to sign ‘world class’ striker next year despite developments yesterday

Chelsea are reportedly standing firm with their plan to try sign Napoli’s Victor Osimhen next year.

Victor Osimhen, who’s scored seven goals in 15 games so far this season, is a very highly-rated striker.

We’ve seen frequent rumours linking Chelsea with a move for the 24-year-old Napoli frontman.

However, journalist Fabrizio Romano claimed via X yesterday that Napoli have reached an agreement in principle with Osimhen for a new contract.

So, does this new development end the Chelsea interest?

The impact of a new contract

90min has followed other reports by mentioning Osimhen and Napoli being close to agreeing terms for a new deal.

They claim that there will be a release clause worth around €120million (£112million), which is how much it would take any interested buyers to get him.

The report adds that Chelsea have always known about the contact negotiations, but it’s not making a difference to the plan of making a move for Napoli’s talisman next summer.

Chelsea still want to sign Victor Osimhen

We’re glad to hear Chelsea still have the Serie A attacker firmly in their sights.

Our worry is that it looks the club may have to yet again spend over £100million on a single player, something they’ve done with the midfield duo of Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez in 2023.

Of course, Osimhen would be a serious risk for a massive transfer fee, especially given the fact he’s never played in England before. We wouldn’t mind the club going all out to try and sign him, though.

The No 9 curse continues to exist at Stamford Bridge and Chelsea are not going to become a force again until they find this magical 20-goal striker. It’s a problem they’ve had ever since Diego Costa left the club.

Osimhen, who’s got 66 goals inn 116 appearances during an exciting time in Naples, looks like a complete striker. We’re optimistic that he’s got the physical attributes to be an elite addition for any Premier League club.

It would be fantastic to see him lining up in a Chelsea blue shirt next season.
