Chelsea boss Frank Lampard was understandably disappointed by the way his team lost on Saturday, this time at the hands of Everton.
It was the second time in just over a week that the Blues lost to a team battling at the bottom of the table and came away with nothing. The manner of the goals conceded on Saturday particularly irked Lampard.
When speaking to the club website following the loss, Lampard commented: ”All the goals were sloppy. The first goal was something we were aware of, Richarlison in the air in the box, and then the other two were just really poor defending from us. We were looking like getting back in the game at 2-1 and we can’t give away a goal like the third. It was ridiculous.”
Mateo Kovacic pulled one back for Chelsea when they were 2-0 down with a wonderfully guided volley into the bottom corner. The Blues then looked to be press for an equalizer before a catalog of errors saw them concede a third.
First, it was Kepa, who misplaced his pass to Kurt Zouma. This was then followed by a number of failed tackles before Everton’s Calvert-Lewin squirmed the ball between the Spanish goalkeeper’s legs.
Lampard will want these costly errors stamped out as soon as possible. Mistakes can be made and recovered from over the course of a season. The same cannot be said, however, for the knockout competitions.
Chelsea have to beat LOSC Lille in the Champions League on Tuesday to ensure qualification into the last 16. Chelsea cannot make the same mistakes against Lille. If they do, the club risk being knocked out of a competition they will desperately want to progress in.
