Back in January, it was said that Chelsea were making enquiries over a summer move to sign Sergej Milinkovic-Savic from Lazio.

It was Football London who detailed how the Blues – and Arsenal – were laying down the groundwork over a deal for the Serbia international at the end of the season, as he entered the final 18 months of his contract.

Lazio President Claudio Lotito boldly claimed that he will not sell Milinkovic-Savic, who he describes as the best midfielder in the world, and slapped a €120m (£104m) price tag on his star man’s head.

Now – however – there has been a significant development, and Todd Boehly has to act.

What’s the story?

Well, Lotito confidently told Il Messaggero: “He scored a goal at the World Cup with his ankle injured and he’s the best midfielder in the world. I will not sell Milinkovic-Savic, I will offer him a renewal. I reiterate, he is now worth €120m (£104m), and every month that passes, the price goes up.”

Now, according to Sky Italia, the Serbian is available for a sum in the region of €30m – €35m (£26m – £30m) with Lazio resigned to losing their No.21 this summer.

The Italian news outlet states that Lazio are very concerned about losing Milinkovic-Savic for nothing next summer, so they are willing to accept a heavily reduced fee in order to make some money in the upcoming transfer window.

That opens up a very, very tempting opportunity for Chelsea, one we feel Boehly cannot ignore.

What Milinkovic-Savic would bring to Chelsea

While we wouldn’t agree with Lotito that Milinkovic-Savic is the best midfielder on the planet, he is certainly up there.

The 28-year-old boasts a number of strengths, mainly his passing ability and impact in the final third.

Milinkovic-Savic has scored nine goals while also providing eight assists from midfield this season.

In total, the Lleida-born maestro has registered 126 goal involvements in 339 appearances for Lazio, which is a brilliant return when you consider the fact he plays as more of a box-to-box midfielder rather than an attacking midfielder.

With Chelsea lacking goals in the side – the Blues have scored just 37 in the Premier League this season – a move for Milinkovic-Savic at around £30m simply cannot be ignored.
