Chelsea could have earned more from 24-year-old’s sale this summer, but he pushed for another move

Chelsea wanted to sell Christian Pulisic to Lyon this summer as there was more money on offer – but the American pushed to join AC Milan.

That is according to Calcio Mercato.

So, what was written about Christian Pulisic? Let’s take a look…

What’s the story?

Well, the United States international ended up moving to the San Siro in a deal worth £18.8m back in June.

However – if Chelsea had their way – Pulisic would have moved to France.

Calcio Mercato believe the 24-year-old pushed hard to join AC Milan, and Chelsea eventually agreed to grant his wishes despite losing a bit of cash in the process.

That is fairly admirable from the Blues, who were already going to have to accept a huge loss on their initial £58m investment made when signing the forward from Borussia Dortmund in January 2019.

Pulisic has started well in Milan, scoring two goals in three Serie A appearances so far after reuniting with Fikayo Tomori and Olivier Giroud at the San Siro.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek also joined AC Milan over the summer.

Unfortunately, Calcio Mercato do not disclose just how much more Lyon offered in comparison to AC Milan, although The Athletic believe the French giants offered £21.5m before being rejected.

Chelsea might regret Christian Pulisic sale

Of all the sales Chelsea made this summer, we felt Pulisic’s departure was a strange one to sanction.

In many ways, the American is someone Todd Boehly would have presumably been keen to sign if he wasn’t already at Stamford Bridge when the 49-year-old took over.

From a marketing aspect, Pulisic would be invaluable to Chelsea if he became consistently effective, especially with the World Cup in the United States approaching in 2026.

Furthermore, Mauricio Pochettino could do with a bit of confidence and experience in attack, as the likes of Mykhailo Mudryk and Noni Madueke struggle to rack up goal involvements.

On the basis of Pulisic’s start to life in Italy, Chelsea could regret selling him for so little.
