Chelsea could now make a stunning move for Harry Maguire after Manchester United decided to withdraw the captaincy from him.

That is according to The Sun.

So, what is the situation involving Harry Maguire and Chelsea? Let’s take a look…

What’s the story?

Well, the England international was told by Erik ten Hag that he would no longer be captain on Sunday, a decision which is said to have left him ‘angry and shocked’ – according to The Sun.

Now, Maguire could be moving to Chelsea as he aims to leave the Red Devils.

The Sun believe Manchester United want £50m for the 30-year-old, who has struggled at Old Trafford since his world-record £80m move from Leicester in August 2019.

However, it is said that Manchester United’s asking price is likely to drop to around £30m – as few potential buyers are expected to be interested at £50m.

West Ham, Tottenham and Newcastle are also said to be keen on signing Maguire, with Chelsea considering a move too as Mauricio Pochettino aims to inject some experience into his backline.

Al-Nassr, Inter Milan and Al-Hilal are interested in the Manchester United No.5 as well.

Chelsea should avoid Harry Maguire move

While we still think Maguire has what it takes to be a strong performer in the Premier League, he is unlikely to suit Pochettino’s style.

The Sheffield-born defender’s problem at Old Trafford has been his failure to adapt to a high line, as his lack of pace makes it difficult for him to recover – he has also struggled to play out from the back.

Pochettino will want speedy, energetic defenders with strong technical skills to help his high-pressing style be effective, like Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld displayed in his best performing Tottenham side.

For a sum in the region of £30m to £50m, Chelsea should go nowhere near Maguire this summer.
