Chelsea could now turn to sign ‘unbelievable’ midfielder after Moises Caicedo fiasco

Chelsea could turn their attention to signing Southampton midfielder Romeo Lavia as Liverpool close in on Moises Caicedo.

That is according to talkSPORT.

The outlet states that Liverpool have overtaken Chelsea in the race for Moises Caicedo and are now set to land the Brighton & Hove Albion star in a deal worth a record £110m.

It means Chelsea may now be forced to start looking at alternatives, with talkSPORT claiming that they could make a fresh move for Romeo Lavia.

On Thursday, journalist Ben Jacobs reported that Chelsea’s initial bid for the Belgian this transfer window had been rejected.

Chelsea missing out on Moises Caicedo would be a disaster

As far as alternatives go, Lavia would not be a terrible plan B if Chelsea do lose out on Caicedo, which now looks highly likely.

The 19-year-old is a talented midfielder with a lot of potential and showed as much last season.

His former Southampton team-mate Nathan Redmond has described the quality he has as “unbelievable”.

Nevertheless, ending up with the Belgium international instead of Caicedo would be the ultimate failure. The Brighton man is clearly the man who Chelsea wanted. To miss out on the player and watch him join one of their fierce rivals at this stage would be embarrassing.

Chelsea lost Mason Mount, N’Golo Kante, Mateo Kovacic and Ruben Loftus-Cheek earlier in the transfer window, so bringing in midfield reinforcements was always going to be a priority for the club.

However, they have struggled with that and the new season is now here. You now just have to ask how did the decision makers at Stamford Bridge let it get to this point?

Liverpool’s move for Caicedo will certainly come as a frustrating development to Mauricio Pochettino, who does not have too many midfield options going into that highly anticipated clash against Jurgen Klopp’s side on Sunday.
