Chelsea confirmed on Tuesday (official website) that defender Ola Aina will complete a permanent move to Italian club Torino.
The Blues confirmed that the Serie A club have exercised an option to make his deal permanent, after he spent the 2018/19 campaign on loan with them.
His £8.7million exit (Evening Standard) will give him the chance to continue pursing regular first-team action, something that he was starting to get in Italy.
The Nigeria international played 32 times for Torino and helped his team finish seventh in Serie A.
Chelsea fans all too well about players leaving Stamford Bridge and going on to enjoy success elsewhere, which could well be the case in this scenario.
Aina is a versatile full-back that is comfortable on either flank and certainly has the attributes that could have seen him succeed in the Premier League.
The 22-year-old was important player at youth level for Chelsea and featured six times in the first team, but never fully got his shot to make his mark.
But Chelsea’s full-back area is certainly in need of upgrading and it may be an error to let him depart for under £10million.
The athletic defender certainly showed enough during his loan in Italy to suggest he’s in for a bright future and he could be another one that got away.
Chelsea have the likes of Reece James and Jay Dasilva who could emerge as full-back options instead, so hopefully the club have hedged their bets on the right one and it will be intriguing to see how Aina develops.
