Chelsea could have a great opportunity to sign Santos youngster Marcos Leonardo in January.

According to 90min, Chelsea watched Marcos Leonardo at the 2023 FIFA U20 World Cup and Santos are ready to sell him for £20m in the next transfer window.

The Blues could face competition for his signature, though, with the same outlet reporting that the likes of Arsenal, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur have also watched him.

Chelsea have really tapped into the Brazilian market recently, so it would not be a surprise if they did make a move for Leonardo.

In the summer transfer window, they signed both Deivid Washington and Angelo from the young striker’s current team.

Will Chelsea sign Marcos Leonardo in January?

Again, their recent transfer strategy suggests they very well could make a move for the Brazilian when the market reopens.

Should Chelsea really be thinking about signing more young players, though? Looking at the current state of their squad, probably not.

It lacks experience and a proven centre-forward. Bringing in Leonardo will not solve any of those issues.

Of course, there is nothing wrong with Chelsea planning for the future. But when you look at their squad, you cannot help but feel that they have done too much of that and forgotten about what is actually needed at this moment in time.

It is clearly the direction the club want to go in under Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital, though, and some of their young signings are managing to make an impact now.

You think of 21-year-old Cole Palmer, for example, who has been compared to his former Manchester City teammate Kevin De Bruyne by Chelsea legend Pat Nevin.

Still, it would be nice if the Blues signed more players who are ready to deliver for Chelsea now and get the club back to where they once were.
