Chelsea could still sign 26-year-old defender in January who’s Premier League rivals’ fastest player

Chelsea could sign one Premier League defender before the transfer window closes.

Chelsea are interested in signing Fulham left-back Antonee Robinson and journalist Simon Phillips has shared on his Substack that he has a source who is “not ruling that out”.

Mauricio Pochettino has Levi Colwill and Ben Chilwell for the left-back position, but the former is a central defender by trade and the latter keeps getting injured, only recently returning from a hamstring problem.

Marc Cucurella is sidelined at the minute as well and Chelsea allowed Ian Maatsen to join Borussia Dortmund on loan.

When you consider all of the above, then, the Blues could perhaps do with the arrival of a new left-back.

Antonee Robinson to Chelsea not ruled out

There could be an opportunity for Chelsea to sign Robinson here, especially with Fulham being interested in Armando Broja.

According to Phillips, the Cottagers have just had an offer for Broja rejected by Chelsea.

In terms of what Robinson could bring to the left-back position at Chelsea, he is one of the fastest players in the Premier League.

Last season, the division’s official website showed how truly quick Robinson is. His top speed was 35.34 km/h, the highest in Marco Silva’s squad.

The 26-year-old USA international has missed just one Premier League game for Fulham this term. He is not someone who they are going to want to lose, especially this late in the transfer window.

Again, though, perhaps their interest in Broja could open up the way for Chelsea to do something.

Whether it is now or in the summer, the club are probably going to have to sign a new left-back. Robinson is clearly one option for them, but if that does not happen now, then Pochettino will have to continue with Colwill and Chilwell and pray that the latter does not pick up another injury.
