Chelsea are reportedly eyeing defender Jose Gimenez from Spanish club Atletico Madrid – and some of the Blues fans on Twitter are eager for him to make a switch to Stamford Bridge.

According to the Telegraph, Frank Lampard’s side have scouted the 25-year-old as a possible target but will need to offload a centre-back from the current squad first if they want to sign him.

The report claims that Chelsea scouts have watched the Uruguay international on a number of occasions in action.

It is understood that the centre-back as a £109million release clause, but Chelsea would not fork out that sum and have to negotiate a much lower price.

After a 5-3 defeat to Liverpool in midweek, the issues in the backline where once again on display and it’s a problem that desperately needs fixing for next season.

There has especially been a serious issue in defending set-pieces throughout the entire campaign and a commanding aerial presence in the defence would be ideal.

Gimenez is a highly-rated centre-back that is great in the air and has incredible experience for a 25-year-old, earning 58 senior international caps for Uruguay already.

He’s a ball-playing defender that has made 190 appearances for Atletico too and previously won La Liga, which is why a selection of Chelsea fans on social media believe he could be a great addition.
