Chelsea fans react as Ross Barkley joins Aston Villa on loan

Chelsea midfielder Ross Barkley has completed a loan move on Wednesday morning to Aston Villa – and some of the Blues fans on Twitter have reacted negatively to the breaking news.

Villa have confirmed on their official website that the 26-year-old has joined them on a season-long loan, with their manager Dean Smith describing his signing as a “real coup” for the Midlands club.

Barkley was an unused substitute on Tuesday night in Chelsea’s penalty shootout defeat to Tottenham in the Carabao Cup and he’s now completed a move to Premier League rivals Villa.

The central midfielder had featured in three of the opening five games for Frank Lampard’s side at the beginning of the new season and previously scored in the cup against Barnsley, but he’s been allowed to leave on a temporary basis.

A selection of Chelsea supporters on social media are stunned with the fact that Barkley has been allowed to leave and many feel he was an important part of the squad.

The English playmaker is a versatile midfielder that can be used in a number eight position or a number 10 role, and he brings a physicality in the centre of the park as well as plenty of agility.

Despite the fact he’s not been a nailed-on starter since his £15million (BBC) transfer to Chelsea from Everton in 2018, he’s come up with some memorable moments for the club and was instrumental in the run to the FA Cup final last season.

With Barkley now out of the picture, it looks like it will be up to player such as Mason Mount, Jorginho, Mateo Kovacic, N’Golo Kante and possibly Ruben Loftus-Cheek to fight for a starting midfield position.
