It is understood that the 32-year-old has opted against signing a new deal with Italian outfit Napoli and his deal with them expires at the end of the season, which means he will be available on a free transfer.

The report adds that other teas are expected to join the race for the Belgium international.

Mertens is a skilful striker with great pace and dribbling technique, which has seen him be a real success in Serie A over the recent years.

He’s still a talisman in the Napoli team this season, with nine goals and four assists in 22 games across all competitions.

His eye-catching record of five goals in six Champions League group stage matches highlights he is a big-game player, especially when two of them were against the competition holders Liverpool.
