Even though the summer transfer window is still a few months away from opening, Chelsea appear to be working very hard in the background on bringing new players to Stamford Bridge.

Earlier this week, transfer speculation claimed that Chelsea have agreed a deal to sign Sporting Lisbon’s 17-year-old winger Geovany Quenda.

Quenda has completed his Chelsea medical and will officially join the Blues squad in 2026. Until then, the teenage attacker will keep developing in Portugal with Sporting.

Fans now have a second piece of transfer news to consume in the space of a couple of days…

Chelsea agree to sign midfielder Dario Essugo

Sporting Lisbon midfielder Dario Essugo, who’s currently impressing during a season-long loan in the Spanish La Liga with Las Palmas, will become the latest Chelsea recruit.

According to A Bola, Chelsea have reached an agreement with Sporting to sign Essugo.

Apparently, the 20-year-old defensive midfielder will become a Blues player next season. Chelsea reached an agreement with a fixed transfer worth €22m (£19m) to sign the youngster in recent hours.

The report adds that Quenda’s €51m (£43m) transfer from Sporting to Chelsea will be put on hold until 2026.

Chelsea were tipped to sign Essugo in January, but nothing came about from that speculation. Now it looks like they’ve got their man, as the Portuguese midfielder will join them ahead of the 2025/26 season.

Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim previously called Essugo “talented” after managing him at Sporting.

Chelsea’s midfield next season

It’s suddenly starting to look like it could be quite crowded in Chelsea’s midfield this summer, so it’ll be interesting to see who head coach Enzo Maresca keeps in his squad for next season.

If Essugo joins up with the Blues this summer, he’ll be the latest in a long line of defensive midfielders on the club’s books.

Chelsea already have the likes of Romeo Lavia, Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez as first-team stars. Plus, Andrey Santos and Lesley Ugochukwu are two more talented young midfielders enjoying respective loans this season at Strasbourg and Southampton, too.

The jury is still out on if the club’s approach of signing so many young emerging stars will work, but it doesn’t look like they’re slowing down.
