Chelsea have now asked about signing Nicolo Barella in a swap deal involving Romelu Lukaku as talks with Inter Milan continue over a number of transfers.

That is according to Corriere dello Sport.

So, what is the latest on Chelsea and Romelu Lukaku? Let’s take a look…

What’s the story?

Well, the Belgium international has a proposal from Saudi Arabia on the table – although he is not too keen on the idea, and wants to stay in Europe.

Inter Milan are desperate to take Lukaku back on loan – with Corriere dello Sport stating that the Italian giants are also open to signing Kalidou Koulibaly permanently.

However, Chelsea – in need of at least one new midfielder – asked Inter Milan about Barella as the UEFA Champions League finalists continue to make attempts to sign Lukaku on loan again.

The Italian news outlet states that Inter Milan have yet to respond to Chelsea’s enquiry about the Italy international – who Antonio Conte once called the “perfect” midfielder after a win over Juventus in January 2021.

Chelsea are also keen to lure Andre Onana away from the San Siro, so there could be two Inter Milan players arriving at Stamford Bridge this summer.

Chelsea face Barella competition

Chelsea may struggle to land Barella given the fact Newcastle are very keen to sign the 26-year-old.

According to the Telegraph, Eddie Howe is confident of agreeing a £50m deal with Inter Milan as the Magpies look to strengthen their side with Champions League quality, ahead of a return to Europe’s greatest club competition.

Of course, Chelsea still have strong pulling power without European football to offer, and have a decent chance of signing Barella due to Inter Milan’s fondness of Lukaku, so the situation certainly isn’t a foregone conclusion.

Be sure to keep an eye on this situation, as we expect Chelsea and Inter Milan to complete some concrete business together soon.
