Chelsea had the opportunity this summer to sign Sergio Ramos for nothing, but they ignored the offer.

That is according to a report from 90min.

They claim that Sergio Ramos, 37, was offered around to several top clubs this summer as a free agent.

It is understood that Chelsea, Bayern Munich and Manchester United were all approached, with the trio keeping the veteran defender in mind.

The report explains that the centre-back received no offers from the aforementioned trio, though.

Apparently, Ramos rejected an offer to go to Saudi Arabia. He’s now completed a move this week to seal a return to La Liga club Sevilla.

Ramos is one of the greatest centre-halves in the sport’s history, boasting a trophy cabinet that the majority of players could only dream of. His list of honours includes a World Cup medal, two European Championship successes, and four Champions League titles.

A peak Ramos walks into any club side around the world. The former Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain star has now returned to Sevilla to see out the closing stages of his career.

Chelsea have seen first-hand the benefit of using a veteran defender in their side, with 38-year-old Thiago Silva the bedrock of the defence in the past few years. There’s no way Ramos would’ve made sense as an addition to this squad, though.

It’s worth noting that Chelsea’s current squad under Mauricio Pochettino does lack a significant amount of experience.

Aside from Thiago Silva and Raheem Sterling, we’re struggling to pick out too many more Blues stars with loads of know-how at the highest level.

In our view, Chelsea fans will need to be patient with this young group in the months ahead.
