Chelsea interested in signing 30-year-old midfielder to add much-needed experience to squad

Chelsea have been linked with a move for an established midfielder who could sort out the biggest problem many believe the club have right now.

It has been clear since Todd Boehly took over the club that they have only been willing to sign players under the age of 25, and this has left them with an extremely promising squad.

However, the youngest squad in the Premier League is relying on the likes of Tosin Adarabioyo and Robert Sanchez for experience, with both of them at an average age for a player in this league.

Jody Morris theorised that the owners were not backing Enzo Maresca in the transfer window, and it seems clear that experience is what is needed to help take them to the next level.

Chelsea interested in signing Sergej Milinkovic-Savic

One player the Blues have been linked with is Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, who is currently playing in Saudi Arabia for Al Hilal.

After joining in 2023, the Serbian midfielder’s contract expires at the end of the season, and according to Corriere Dello Sport, the Blues are interested in the prospect of a free signing at the conclusion of the campaign.

Opportunistic signings have been the story of recent Chelsea transfer windows. They brought in Alejandro Garnacho from Manchester United for a much lower fee than they would’ve been able to if they’d signed him 12 months ago.

At 30 years of age, Milinkovic-Savic would provide vital experience in a position where there is already plenty of quality jostling for a position in the starting side.

Chelsea’s big spending has paid off in midfield

The Blues broke the transfer record twice in consecutive windows to bring in Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo, with the duo now forming one of the best partnerships in the league.

They also have Romeo Lavia and Andrey Santos providing competition, making the addition of a new central midfielder something that shouldn’t be seen as a priority.

The Blues are crying out for a new centre-back following the injury to Levi Colwill before the campaign got underway, and Maresca called out for this before the season got underway.

It has been reported that Chelsea are now considering a new centre-back in January, with injuries impacting the likes of Tosin Adarabioyo, Wesley Fofana and Benoit Badiashile so far this season.
