Chelsea linked to Trabzonspor goalkeeper Ugurcan Cakir

Turkish journalist has claimed Chelsea are prepared to pay £26.7million for Trabzonspor goalkeeper Ugurcan Cakir.

Former Trabzonspor midfielder turned journalist Lemi Celik said that the Blues have allocated a €30m (£26.7m) budget to sign the Trabzonspor shot-stopper.

Speaking Turkish radio Radyospor (as reported by Independent Turkey and Turkish Football), Celik said: “Chelsea want Ugurcan Cakir, they are prepared to pay €30m for him.

“Chelsea are the only side who are prepared to pay what Trabzonspor want for him and that makes them favorites.”

The former defensive midfielder also believes that the 24-year-old who has already made two appearances for the Turkey national team would meet the requirements for the UK’s work permit.

Back in March, another Turkish outlet Fotosport also ran a story about Chelsea’s interest in Cakir.

The report claimed Chelsea have been getting inside information about the goalkeeper from their former player and assistant manager Eddie Newton who is now at the Turkish club.

While the Blues have recently announced Willy Caballero’s contract extension, they might still want to replace or at least provide competition for Kepa Arrizabalaga.

The Spain international has had the worst save-percentage stats among the Premier League first-choice goalkeepers, saving just 43 from 71 shots (57.7%)  he’s faced this season (FBref).

In comparison, Cakir has made joint second-most saves in Turkish Super Lig, saving 84 from 109 shots (77.1%) he’s faced (FBref).
