Chelsea made the right choice choosing Alejandro Garnacho over Manchester City transfer target

So far, new Chelsea signing Alejandro Garnacho is proving to be a very good bit of business for the club.

John Obi Mikel discussed Garnacho after Chelsea’s victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers just before the international break saying as much.

The winger registered two assists during the game to inspire Enzo Maresca’s side to a 3-0 win at Stamford Bridge.

However, it appears that Garnacho was not the only Premier League winger who caught Chelsea’s attention during the summer.

Chelsea ‘seriously considered’ signing Jeremy Doku

Journalist Simon Phillips recently claimed on his Substack Si Phillips Talks Chelsea that the Blues “seriously considered” making a move for Manchester City’s Jeremy Doku.

While Chelsea may have been interested in Doku, in the end, they decided to settle for Garnacho and Jamie Gittens.

Gittens was spectacular in Chelsea’s 4-3 win against Wolves in the third round of the Carabao Cup, while he also shone in the 5-1 hammering of Ajax in the Champions League. Outside of those games, though, the 21-year-old has underwhelmed.

Therefore, it is quite easy to say that Doku would have been a much better signing than Gittens.

However, the same cannot be said about Garnacho, who is making an impact and is not too dissimilar to Doku as a player.

Chelsea made correct call signing Alejandro Garnacho instead of Jeremy Doku

Chelsea paid just £40m to sign Garnacho from Manchester United. You suspect that Doku would have cost more than that, despite sharing many similarities with the Argentina international.

For example, both wingers are very direct and positive with their wing play. As per FBref, Garnacho is in the 98th percentile for progressive carries per 90 minutes among his positional peers, while Doku is in the 99th.

In terms of output, both attackers can improve there, perhaps Garnacho more so.

Again, though, they are not two completely different footballers. So signing Garnacho for a cut-price fee made plenty of sense, with the former United man already starting to look like a bargain.
