Chelsea now look likely to sign a new left-back in this transfer window following Marc Cucurella’s exit.

Real Madrid have signed Cucurella from Chelsea, leaving the Blues a bit light in the left-back position.

Jorrel Hato can operate there and so can Valentin Barco, but it is not clear what the club are going to do with the latter once they confirm his arrival from Strasbourg.

Who would you rather see at left-back next season, Jorrel Hato or Lewis Hall?

Chelsea considering Alvaro Carreras as option to replace Marc Cucurella

While Cucurella is heading to Real Madrid, one of their players could move in the opposite direction.

Journalist Simon Phillips has claimed on Si Phillips Talks Chelsea that Chelsea are “making checks” on Alvaro Carreras.

Carreras played a lot of games at left-back for Real Madrid last season, but Cucurella’s arrival could see his game time diminish.

The 23-year-old is not the only option the Blues are thought to be considering. According to Phillips, Chelsea are also interested in Lewis Hall and Maxi Araujo.

Hall was on the club’s books before they sold him to Newcastle United permanently back in 2024.

Manchester United are also thought to be keen on Hall and can offer the England international Champions League football. It could give them the upper hand in any potential transfer battle for his signature.

Why Alvaro Carreras could be ideal for Xabi Alonso

Xabi Alonso would have wanted Cucurella to stay. His compatriot is a solid defender with a lot of experience.

Under Enzo Maresca, he was also pretty good going forward. Carreras is also quite an attacking full-back, though, which could make him perfect for Alonso’s 3-4-2-1 formation if the former Real Madrid boss opts to use that.

Last season, Carreras scored two goals and provided three assists in 28 La Liga appearances. According to WhoScored, he also completed one key pass per game, which is really impressive for a defender.

Carreras is a technical footballer and good on the ball. He could easily play as an inverted full-back, too.
