Journalist Simon Phillips has told GiveMeSport that Chelsea are preparing to launch a bid for Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimaraes.

The Blues are likely to invest heavily in the position next year due to the potential exodus they have on their hands.

Jorginho and N’golo Kante both see their contracts with the club expire this summer. So far, there has been no breakthrough in negotiations with either.

The news that the Frenchman is set to miss the next four months through injury hardly suggests he will be offered the lucrative deal he is looking for.

This could see the club invest in more than one option, with Phillips claiming Guimaraes is one of the names on the shortlist.

Chelsea want Guimaraes

He said: “I’ve been told at the moment, Chelsea are looking at Edson Alvarez from Ajax, Moises Caicedo from Brighton, Weston McKennie from Juventus, and Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle. The latter seems ambitious.

“Chelsea have a shortlist of midfielders they are looking at for a priority area in January, and again in the summer. Declan Rice is more possible come the summer rather than in January, same goes for Jude Bellingham, but I think he goes to either Liverpool or Real Madrid.”

Guimaraes has certainly impressed since making his move to the Premier League.

He has often drawn praise from his manager Eddie Howe, who described him as ‘outstanding’ earlier this season.

There were surely even more good things to be said by the manager after this weekends performance too.

Newcastle made their way into the top four above Chelsea with a sensational 2-1 win away at Tottenham, whose poor run continued.

While the move is unlikely at this stage, the signing of Guimaraes would certainly bring a big boost to the quality in Chelsea’s midfield, which could have a very different look next season.
